The purpose of this project was to select an existing band and redesign one of their CD's. I had only recently discovered Royal Blood - an England-based hard rock band - and couldn't stop thinking about their music.
Redesigning one of their CD's was certainly an interesting challenge, because coming up with an illustration that fit their style of music turned out to be more difficult than I anticipated. After listening to their music several times, I was able to come up with some concepts off of which I could base my illustration.
Royal Blood's music brought ideas like rough sketches, charcoal drawings, and power, added to the reds, blacks, and grays I visualized with the ideas. I started coming up with imagery that I felt matched their style, tossing images like ram skulls and jewels until I thought of crowns. I didn't feel like traditional gold-and-fur crowns fit their music, so I thought of different metals that could be used for crowns and fell in love with the idea of one made of iron. The rough crafting of the metal to create a symbol of power fit Royal Blood's music perfectly, so I designed and created a crown with graphite and modified it in Photoshop. The result of this experimentation turned out more successful than I imagined, and I'm proud to claim ownership of it.
After finishing the illustration, I plugged everything into InDesign and formatted it to be the booklet that goes into a plastic CD case, putting the back cover of the case and the CD label into separate documents.
